Detalles del proyecto

Every year, thousands of people step on landmines and loose limbs or their lives over it.

In the fight against Anti-Personnel Mines, the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction is a cornerstone in the effort to end the suffering and casualties caused by Anti-Personnel Mines. It was adopted at the United Nations 10 years ago, on 18 September 1997 and entered into force on 1 March 1999.

The Convention includes a comprehensive ban on Anti-Personnel Mines, a framework of action to address the humanitarian impact of mines and mechanisms to facilitate cooperation in implementing the Convention. As of 1 March 2007, 153 states had joined the Convention.

Since 1999, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) has supported the implementation of the Convention, primarily by hosting meetings of the Standing Committees established by the Convention's States Parties.

The GICHD, in partnership with others, provides operational assistance, creates and disseminates knowledge, improves quality management and standards, and supports instruments of international law, all aimed at increasing the performance and professionalism of mine action.

The April 2007 meetings organized by GICHD will provide an opportunity to discuss the third year of the application of the Nairobi Action Plan 2005-2009, which was adopted on 3 December 2004 at the First Review Conference.

They also allow States Parties to follow-up on the priorities contained in the Geneva Progress Report, which was welcomed on 22 September 2006 at the Seventh Meeting of the States Parties (7MSP).
